“Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep” – Mary Elizabeth Frye
Happy Pride 2019!
[ID: A comic with words from the poem “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep.” Each line of the poem is accompanied by a drawing, telling the story of a trans man coming out. The full poem is linked here. Line by line, the comic is as follows:
Do not stand at my grave and weep : The main character tells his mom that he’s a man, which is illustrated with a blue Mars symbol in a speech bubble.
I am not there. : The mom turns away from her child, crying and denying him; her speech bubble crosses out the Mars symbol and replaces it with a bunch of pink Venus symbols. Her son reaches after her, distraught.
I do not sleep. : The main character is shown awake in bed with bags under his eyes.
I am a thousand winds that blow. / I am the diamond glints on snow. : In a dream, he falls through the sky crying, his long hair caught by the wind.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain. / I am the gentle autumn rain. : A close-up of the main character’s tears as he closes his eyes.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush : The main character wakes up and puts a hand to his chest. His hair is short now, indicating that time has passed since he came out.
I am the swift uplifting rush / of quiet birds in circled flight. : He puts on his binder with a smile.
I am the soft stars that shine at night. : He looks over to where his cell phone beeps on a nearby table.
Do not stand at my grave and cry. : The phone screen shows a text conversation between the main character and his mom. The incoming message says “Hi!” with a pink Venus sign: his mom is misgendering or deadnaming him. The main character picks up his phone, then puts it back down and turns away.
I am not there. I did not die. : The main character is at Pride surrounded by other people. He waves a transgender flag triumphantly and wears another like a cape, proclaiming his transness to the world with a big blue Mars symbol and an exclamation point in a speech bubble. He has a big, joyful smile.]

biden: my new plan guarantees four additional years of free education
kids in high school: holy shit free college?!
biden: oh no two years of pre-school and then two years of college*
*only at select locations, restrictions apply
Okay but pre-school is expensive as hell. Making it free will directly improve the lives of so many families.
so is community college it will literally cut the cost of college in half or make it free for the people that choose one of the many careers you can get with a two year degree are y'all stupid or just dumb
do ppl actually not realise how important affordable childcare is to working women???
Hi, I'm a mum! Pre-pandemic, I was working over forty hours a week, and the entirety of my paycheck went to covering my kid's daycare cost. Daycare and pre school are expensive, so much so that a lot of people quite literally can't afford it, even when working full time.
Having two years of pre-k education covered is absolutely beyond helpful. Parents genuinely want to provide the very best for the kids and having early education covered can go a long way in allowing parents to do just that.
Look, I don’t have kids and I am still buried under student loans from college. I absolutely believe free college is necessary.
However.
There is decades worth of evidence that pre-K education is one of the strongest ways of giving kids enduring advantages in K-12 education. A lot of the data comes specifically out of Oklahoma, which does have voluntary universal pre-K (which makes it an excellent case study) and the research shows gains across all racial and socio-economic boundaries. That paper is from 2005. Researchers revisited the kids later to see how persistent these gains were, or if they were drowned out by all the other stuff.
Turns out, the kids who were in pre-K continued to have academic success through middle school (they hadn’t tracked through high school). And just for fun, they also did some projected adult earnings for kids who went through pre-K, as fun benefit-cost analysis of the whole thing. And it looks like the benefits skew disproportionately in favor of the more disadvantaged students.
Community college is great and should be accessible to everybody. But universal pre-K will catch more kids early on to ensure they have a better shot at finishing high school. The evidence screams that it is one of the single most-effective measures in leveling the playing field for all kids, and reducing the generations of privilege baked into the system.
And Biden’s campaign stance was always two years of free community college, NOT four years at any and all universities.
It’s not a bait and switch if it’s the two years of college he previously “promised” us PLUS something new and different that is explained IN THE NEXT / SAME SENTENCE so people wouldn’t get confused and think it meant four years of college.
The wording of the tweet is a little bit bait-and-switch if you haven't been staying on top of the policy discussions, but even so: this is a really good thing, please don't dismiss all the good that this policy will do just because it's not everything you want it to be.
I feel like this is also a subtle way to encourage going to community colleges for trades rather than four year degrees, which is something that we desperately need since we basically lost most of a generation of skilled tradespeople in the push for "you have to get a four year degree to succeed"

Tens of thousands of LGBT veterans forced from the military for their sexual orientation and given other-than-honorable discharges will be able to receive full Veterans Affairs benefits despite their dismissal status under a new move set to be announced Monday.
The change comes as the country approaches the 10th anniversary of repeal of the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” law which forced nearly 14,000 service members out of the ranks for admitting their sexual orientation.
A thing I really like about Joe Biden is his commitment to righting unglamorous wrongs. I know he’s got a team, but clearly he has hired some folks who understand logistics and systems and like the fucking paperwork of it all.
The thing you gotta understand about Biden is that he is the VAWA guy. The entire reason that the Violence Against Women Act exists is that Biden hated the national indifference to domestic violence and wanted to do something about it.
This was not a cause he took on because it was trendy. In fact, it was deeply unpopular, because the vast majority of Americans (including most women!) felt that domestic violence was a private matter that government shouldn't intervene in, and that neither date rape nor marital rape was rape at all. Most women believed that, let alone men! And feminism had a lot of power, but that power was at a nadir. The late 80s/early 90s was the core of the backlash against second-wave feminism, earlier legislative efforts to enshrine women's rights (such as the Equal Rights Amendment) had failed, there were almost no female legislators. There was no political or social pushing, inside or outside of Washington, for legislation protecting women from domestic violence or other gendered violence.
And Biden decided to change that.
Biden assigned one of his staffers (a young female lawyer) to study the issue and craft a piece of legislation aimed at protecting women, modeled on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The staffer didn't want to do it initially, because she didn't want to get pigeonholed into working solely on 'women's issues.' But she did it, and she and Biden and Rep. Louise Slaughter (a Democrat in the House) crafted the bill and built a coalition and convinced women's groups that this was important enough to use political capital on, and got it passed and signed into law in 1994. The bill changed a lot of laws to make domestic violence and acquaintance rape and marital rape easier to prosecute, and it changed the national conversation around domestic violence and rape.
Is VAWA perfect? No. Do I always agree with Biden on priorities and issues? Oh heck no. But the fact remains that Biden is a guy who will look at an injustice that society doesn't care about and decide to do something about it, and do it effectively.
